Rangers defender Nathan Patterson has passionately stated his desire to stay at Ibrox in order to push James Tavernier for a spot in the starting XI [RangersTV].
The 19-year-old right-back made his first start of 2020/21 on Thursday night, playing 66 minutes of the Gers’ 2-0 win over Lech Poznan in Poland.
It was just the third time he’s featured this season despite Rangers playing 26 matches in all competitions, with his lack of playing time largely due to Tavernier’s outstanding form.
The skipper is currently the top goalscorer and top assist provider in the Premiership and one of the highest-ranked defenders in the Europa League.
However, Patterson has no intention of heading out on loan to get minutes elsewhere.
“No, I think it’s a good challenge to put myself up against Tav,” he said [RangersTV]. “Obviously, he’s done really well this season. I’m pushing him to do better and he’s pushing me to do better, and it’s showing on the pitch.”
“Rangers are the club I want to be at. I don’t want to be anywhere else.”
Supporters are bound to love these comments from the Scotland youth international, who has been with the club since a young age.
While the likes of Kai Kennedy, Robby McCrorie and Lewis Mayo are elsewhere gaining senior experience, he’s testing himself daily in training against the likes of Ryan Kent and Kemar Roofe.
Neither approach guarantees success but it’s clear that the teenager feels he’s better off staying at Ibrox and with the club fighting for multiple trophies this season, it’s no surprise he wants to be a part of it.
