Serie A giants Napoli are reportedly reigniting their interest in Rangers left-back Borna Barisic, according to a report in Italy.
The Croatian international is apparently on a four-man left-back shortlist of Napoli boss and ex-Gers midfielder Rino Gattuso.
According to the report from Il Mattino, Napoli are considering moves for Barcelona’s Junior Firpo, Getafe’s Marc Cucurella, and Olympiakos’ Konstantinos Tsimikas alongside the Rangers man.
Left-back is obviously seen as a problem area for the San Paolo club and it is a testament to the Rangers defender’s ability and standing that he has been named on this shortlist.
Il Mattino is a reputable daily news outlet based in Naples and this is also not the first time Barisic has been linked with a move to the Italian club.
Around the same time as the Napoli links emerged, Italian football journalist Ciro Venerato claimed that Barisic was not at the top of this shortlist, something which will ease the fears of any Rangers fans.
“Barišić from Rangers is being followed, but he’s not top of the list,“ explained Venerato [CN24]. “Not even second.
“There are other priorities in the role. If the priorities disappeared, they could think about him, but there are other players Napoli feel are better”.
First-choice Croatian international Barisic was one of the Ibrox club’s stand-out players last season after a difficult first year in royal blue and signed a new contract in January, committing himself to the club until 2024.
Steven Gerrard praised the “fantastic relationship” between himself and Barisic prior to the contract and the former NK Osijek captain is highly-valued at Ibrox.
Rangers have also signed former Leicester City full-back Calvin Bassey to provide competition for the left-back berth this season.
Barisic has made 61 appearances in total for Rangers, scoring twice and boasting an impressive 18 assists.
