Rangers defender George Edmundson has been nominated for a unique award for his performances during his time with Oldham Athletic.

The 22-year-old centre half impressed so much at Boundary Park he caught the eye of Steven Gerrard and outgoing director of football Mark Allen.

And now it appears his commanding, mature displays for the League Two side have also caught the eyes of those handling the Ladbrokes Northwest Football Awards.

Edmundson has been nominated for the Rising Star award and will compete against 16 different players for the prestigious accolade.

Edmundson will be up against the likes of Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood and Wigan’s Reece James amongst many others.

The award is currently held by none other than Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, a Champions League winner last season.

Fans are being invited to cast their votes for whatever player they believe deserves to be recognised as the Rising Star in the English region.

Up north, Edmundson has been used sparingly in the early part of this season, with the defender being unable to shift the reliable duo of Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson.

The player himself has expressed frustration about this, but when Edmundson has played we’ve seen glimpses of why Rangers were so desperate to bring him to Ibrox.

Rangers spent close to £700k on the defender to bring him from Oldham in the summer, with Edmundson signing a four-year deal at Ibrox.
