Philippe Clement is just starting to get more options in forward areas for Rangers with the return of both Kemar Roofe and Rabbi Matondo, however, there could be bad news on the horizon.

The Gers boss introduced them for the last half an hour rather than waiting to make a change and it’s safe to say that they made differing levels of impact.

With Rangers needing a winner, it was Kemar Roofe who proved to be the hero but after a difficult cameo, Rabbi Matondo didn’t look good at all when everyone else around him was celebrating.

Rangers facing Rabbi Matondo cup final sweat

One incident in particular saw the Wales international come in for criticism.

Deep into injury time, rather than running the ball into the corner – and he is quick enough to do this – he chose to shoot from 30 yards out.

It wasn’t the fact that he shot that was frustrating, it was that it was such a languid effort.

Watching the game back though, there is a reason why Matondo, hailed as “electric” by Clement appears to just kick the ball away.

At some point, he must have picked up a knock because he struggles to recover and get back into position, looking awkward as he hobbles to cover the space on his wing.

To make matters worse, at full-time, the Rangers social media account posted a couple of photographs and videos of the squad celebrating that shows a clearly distressed Rabbi Matondo in the background.

In one video, he is struggling to walk and, in another picture, he is seen having his knee assessed by two members of the medical team.

Not what Philippe Clement wants.

There was no mention post-match of the issue, only of Jose Cifuentes having a muscle problem that caused his evening to end prematurely.

The ViaPlay Cup final will be on us before we know it and there is little time for recovery.

Rabbi Matondo is young and his powers of healing will be at their peak but even the most optimistic of Rangers fans will be surprised if he makes Sunday’s trip to Aberdeen or even the visit to Ibrox of St Johnstone next week.

We can only hope that it looked worse than it is.
