Rangers missed out on signing Danilho Doekhi and the defender just continues to go from strength to strength for Union Berlin.

The Gers were looking for central defenders in 2022 and ended up securing John Souttar on a pre-contract agreement.

Ben Davies then arrived from Liverpool following Calvin Bassey’s exit, and he has featured prominently under Michael Beale.

Rangers did miss out on a potential signing though with Danilho Doekhi slipping through the net at Ibrox.

The Athletic reported in January of last year that Rangers were in a ‘strong position’ to bring Doekhi to Glasgow.

Doekhi was inside the final six months of his Vitesse Arnhem deal and fellow Dutchman Giovanni van Bronckhorst seemingly identified him as a key target.

However, De Gelderlander reported that Doekhi rejected Rangers in favour of making the move to the Bundesliga with Union Berlin.

It now feels like Rangers really missed out on a quality signing with Doekhi shining over in Germany.

Former Rangers target Danilho Doekhi enjoys European success with Union Berlin

Doekhi has been an unexpected goal threat for Union this season, racking up four goals in just 12 Bundesliga games despite being a centre back.

The 24-year-old took those goalscoring talents to the European stage on Thursday night as he found the net once again.

Doekhi powered a header home to make it 3-1 to Union against European giants Ajax in the second leg of their Europa League clash.

Union’s incredible season just keeps going and dumping Ajax out of the competition gives them a quite remarkable story.

Doekhi even won the penalty for Union’s opener, with his header striking the hand of former Rangers defender Calvin Bassey.

An incredible threat from set pieces, Doekhi is impressing as much with his attacking threat as he is with his defending, and he will sadly be out of the Gers’ range now.
