Rangers are now without the club’s four first-choice centre-backs after Giovanni van Bronckhorst ruled Ben Davies out of the Champions League clash with Ajax.

The £4m summer signing from Liverpool joins vice-captain Connor Goldson, Scotland international John Souttar and big Swede Filip Helander on the club’s remarkable injury list.

Include the fact that John Lundstram is suspended and it means that USA loanee James Sands is set to partner with teenage centre-back Leon King for the clash at Ibrox.

No-one planned for this and no-one saw that coming.

“Ben Davies didn’t train but hopefully he will be involved at the weekend,” said Van Bronckhorst [Rangers].

“Tomorrow, is too early.”

Ben Davies knock means Rangers without 4 CBs for Ajax visit

That means that the four centre-backs who would’ve been rotated as starters this season are now all out of an elite-level Champions League clash with Ajax and it’s little wonder Giovanni van Bronckhorst is feeling the pressure.

A rather tense Van Bronckhorst faced the media ahead of the clash with Ajax amid mounting pressure at Rangers but when situations like this arise, there almost certainly needs to be a level of understanding.

The fact Rangers are now going into this tie with such an inexperienced duo speaks volumes and as the club look to register at least one point from their failed Champions League campaign the order has been made much taller.

Ben Davies took some time to get up to speed and fitness at Rangers but has began to look assured at centre-back for the club so let’s hope he is back for the weekend’s trip to St Johnstone.
