Rangers contract extension Beale can’t ignore amid current issues

Kemar Roofe has made a welcome return to fitness this season and looks to be over the worst of the injury problems that saw him become a forgotten man at Rangers.

The 30-year old Jamaica international might only have one goal in his seven appearances but he has shown that a run of goal scoring form isn’t far behind.

What Michael Beale has to decide now is what Kemar Roofe has to do to earn a new Rangers contract.

Such a question seemed impossible last season and even heading into this campaign.

The obvious caveat will be that he needs to be available more often than he isn’t but there is a worrying fact that might see his previous injury history overlooked.

Does Kemar Roofe deserve a new Rangers contract?

Kemar Roofe remains Rangers best striker.

Only luck and bad officiating has stopped Roofe from having more goals to his name and, against Real Betis, it took a stunning stop from Claudio Bravo to keep him out.

He knows the positions to be in and has the ability to execute the technique required.

Can the same be said of Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers?

It is still early in their Rangers careers but four goals combined in 24 appearances isn’t a good look for a pair that cost a reported £3.5m and £4m.

Roofe has 37 goals in 84 games with a lot of those appearances off the bench.

Beale can’t afford to lose a player that guarantees quality and goals, even if there is always a nagging doubt because of question marks over some of the summer acquisitions.

Danilo might yet prove to be the answer to all our prayers but, when Scott Wright is still getting at start, there are obvious issues in attack.

Until one, or more, of the new boys prove that they are up to the task, the first name up front in the big games will continue to be Kemar Roofe, and how Rangers need him at his prolific best just now.
