‘Huge mistake’: BBC pundit unimpressed with Connor Goldson’s error in Rangers defeat

Rangers defender Connor Goldson has been criticised by pundit Willie Miller following a ‘huge mistake’ in the build-up to Celtic’s first goal.

Celtic took the lead in Sunday’s Viaplay Cup final as Kyogo Furuhashi scored from close range.

The build-up was a shocker from a Rangers perspective.

Goldson appeared to be completely out of position and that meant Ben Davies was dragged over to mark Daizen Maeda in front of goal.

When Maeda missed his kick, Kyogo was on hand to fire home with the goal at his mercy.

Goldson getting pulled out just left Davies with too much to do and Kyogo was never going to miss that chance.

Pundit Willie Miller was unimpressed, telling BBC Sport that he felt it was a ‘huge mistake’ from Goldson and ultimately resulted in the goal being scored.

Miller feels Goldson shouldn’t have been out of position in the first place and his error gifted Celtic the opener.

“Connor Goldson shouldn’t get sucked out in the first place by Daizen Maeda. It’s a huge mistake from the Rangers centre-half,” said Miller.

It didn’t exactly get much better for Goldson and Rangers after the break.

Kyogo again scored from close range to put Celtic 2-0 up before Alfredo Morelos gave Rangers hope.

The Gers had a great spell of pressure at one point but just couldn’t make it count with Celtic eventually running out 2-1 winners.

Rangers fans are understandably frustrated with this defeat, even if it’s only the first of the Michael Beale era.

The ‘old guard’ at Rangers were given another chance to shine today but failed to make it count.

Goldson certainly fits into that category having been at Ibrox for nearly five years now.

The 30-year-old has been a great servant for Rangers but there are moments like these, where his concentration maybe deserts him.

Celtic took full advantage and Rangers would expect better from one of the club’s experienced performers on the big stage.
