Rangers coach praises forgotten man after transfer collapse

Rangers coach Neil Banfield has praised Scott Wright for his performance against Motherwell on Sunday afternoon.

The Gers were back in Scottish Premiership action on Sunday having beaten Real Betis in the Europa League.

The euphoria from that win was quickly neutralised though as Rangers served up another disappointing display.

Michael Beale’s side did claim a 1-0 win thanks to a Cyriel Dessers goal, but the performance was fairly dour yet again.

Rangers fans booed the players off at full time with supporters making it clear that these showings just aren’t good enough.

Scott Wright given chance against Motherwell

Fans were baffled when the starting lineup came out as forgotten man Scott Wright was named in the XI.

Wright had been expected to leave Rangers over the summer but a couple of potential moves broke down.

Preston North End had a bid rejected before a move to Turkish side Pendikspor collapsed.

That meant Beale faced a decision; leave Wright out until January or try to get back involved in the squad.

The 26-year-old hadn’t even kicked a ball for Rangers since a two-minute substitute appearance against Servette on August 9th.

Yet here he was, starting against Motherwell with Beale bizarrely ending up playing him in midfield a 3-5-2 system after Rabbi Matondo’s injury.

Rangers coach praises Wright display

Matondo is now facing around six weeks out and that could give Wright a route back into the Rangers side on a regular basis.

Wright does still have more than 18 months left on his contract, but it’s hard to see him sticking around at Ibrox too much longer.

Still, Wright is now being praised with Rangers assistant Neil Banfield acknowledging his display against Motherwell.

Speaking to Rangers Review, Banfield noted that injuries just mean opportunities for other players – such as Wright.

Banfield felt that Wright did ‘outstandingly well’ for Rangers on Sunday, believing his return to action is ‘great’ as he no doubt targets more opportunities.

“Scott Wright came on at the weekend and did outstandingly well for the team, so it’s great for him,” said Banfield.
