Rangers coach Michael Beale blown away by 'incredible' Ibrox star

Rangers coach Michael Beale has raved about Ibrox star Steven Davis, who became the most-capped UK footballer of all time on Wednesday night [RangersTV].

36-year-old Davis, who recently signed a one-year contract extension at Ibrox, earned his 126th senior cap for Northern Ireland in a World Cup Qualifier against Bulgaria at Windsor Park.

Northern Ireland published a tribute video in advance of kick-off and Rangers also posted several pieces of content in recognition of the milestone.

Biggest STAR Your Club Are Trying To SIGN This Month

A clip from a recent RangersTV interview with Beale, in which the first-team coach waxes lyrical about Davis both as a player and as a person, was also shared by the club.

“It’s incredible,” he said of the record. “126 games this week to break the record. That’s probably, on average, eight or nine international games every season for 16 years. So it’s not just the fact that he’s playing at the level he’s at, it’s the consistency, it’s how you look after your body, it’s the lack of injuries and things like that.”

“He’s low maintenance, high output. He takes care of himself, he takes ownership of his development, he leads by example every day. He’s just an all-round top top fella.

“I think he’s playing some of the best football of his career right now. I knew that when we played Porto last year and they man-marked him. The respect that they gave him just shows you the level that Steven is playing at. When I look at him this season, he’s the elder statesman of the midfield but I think he’s got the youngest legs. What an achievement.”

Beale is a highly respected coach who spent time at Liverpool, Chelsea and Brazilian club Santos before joining the Gers.

He’s worked with some truly world-class players, so the fact that he holds Davis in such high regard is another indication of the Northern Irishman’s quality.

It’s hard to overstate his importance for club and country, in spite of his advancing age, and like Beale, many Bears will be proud to say that the UK’s most-capped footballer ever is a Ger.

Davis may be involved when Rangers take on Cove Rangers in a Scottish Cup Third Round tie on Sunday and the TV details have been confirmed for the clash.
