Rangers could be soon be coming up against Chris Wilder as the out-of-work manager holds talks over a move to Aberdeen.

The Daily Record report that Wilder attended the recent Viaplay Cup final between Rangers and Celtic.

Wilder allegedly wanted to take in the big game in order to learn a little more about Scottish football ahead of potentially heading to Aberdeen.

The former Sheffield United boss watched on as Rangers lost 2-1 to Celtic in a typically pulsating encounter.

Wilder is understood to have held talks with Aberdeen over becoming their new manager.

The Dons sacked Jim Goodwin in January and have yet to appoint his successor in the Pittodrie dugout.

Wilder now appears to be emerging as a key contender for the Aberdeen job and may end up becoming their new boss.

Having taken boyhood club Sheffield United from League One to the Premier League, Wilder’s stock was incredibly high before falling off at Bramall Lane in early 2021.

Wilder has been out of work since losing his job as Middlesbrough boss back in October.

The 55-year-old was actually linked with Rangers after that sacking but the Daily Record suggested that he wouldn’t make the final cut.

Rangers ended up going for Michael Beale but he could soon end up battling against Wilder in Scotland.

Aberdeen host Rangers at Pittodrie in April and the Dons will surely want to have their new manager in place by then.

Wilder thinks that he can turn Aberdeen around, no doubt with the idea of pushing on to close the gap to Rangers and Celtic.

That Viaplay Cup final may have convinced Wilder that Scottish football is right for him, but whether Aberdeen pick him as their new boss remains to be seen.
