Carlos Pena’s loan deals haven’t worked out in recent times, but he could be set for yet another one.

The midfielder is into the final 18 months of his lucrative contract that’s earning him around £20k-per-week at Ibrox. It’s an incredible contract for someone providing next to nothing for the club.

Rangers, naturally, are keen to get him off the wage bill according to the Scotish Sun. That desperation from the club could see him end up back at Leon in Mexico, where Pena enjoyed the best spell of his career.

The midfielder spent three years at Leon between 2014 and 2017. It proved to be the most productive spell of his career, and that’s the club that Rangers signed him from at the start of last season.

Now, it appears that they’re willing to take a gamble with him. Pena has already had two failed loan spells back at his homeland with Cruz Azul and Necaxa respectively. To be fair to him, however, he was also tacking his own personal demons too.

A productive spell in his homeland

Pena managed to bag 42 goals whilst appearing in over 150 games for Leon. It’s pretty much his home at this point, and the move would give Rangers some relief that he’s off the wage bill.

Whether the Mexican side can afford to pay all of Pena’s wages is unclear. What may be beneficial for all parties, however, is if a fraction of his wages are at least paid by the Mexican outfit. This would render him a much cheaper expense than what he currently is for Rangers.

According to the Sun, Pena has no future under Steven Gerrard. It appears that the Liverpool legend doesn’t want to know about him, and is keen on moving him on. It says a lot about Pena’s position when you consider the troubles Rangers are having from midfield.

With Steven Davis on Rangers’ radar ahead of January, it isn’t too surprising to see Pena linked with another move away. Rangers will just be keen to get it done.
