Alfredo Morelos isn’t just the top scorer at Rangers and in the league – he’s our talismanic star.
At the minute, he’s quite simple irreplaceable. He’s been racing up the levels over the course of the last five months and even our rivals are coming round to the idea he’s the real deal.
The fiery Colombian has been so rampant this season that he’s keeping us in a title race. Against St. Johnstone his fire, passion and most of all, ability, shone through.
He was the difference.
Naturally, his form will be attracting suitors across Europe. Goalscorers are football’s most valuable commodity. And I expect more than a few sides will test Rangers patience come January.
But if you take Alfredo Morelos out of the team, you can kiss the league goodbye. Seriously.
I can’t envisage a situation where he leaves and we stay within touching distance, or sign someone who’ll produce so consistently, and quickly. He’s lethal, and the fans adore him. We need him, till at least May. Gary McAllister is also adamant Morelos is going nowhere.
But what if someone offers anywhere up to £20m? Can Rangers afford to turn it down?
What’s crazy is that it might sacrifice our best chance at a league title in years.
Morelos’ goals are invaluable and in the short term, cannot be replaced. But with £20m, Rangers could improve other areas and sign other players.
Let’s just hope we can hold out to May. The league title might rest on it.
