Giovanni van Bronckhorst has weighed in amid speculation about the future of Rangers vice-captain Connor Goldson [RangersTV].
Goldson was a key part of the side that went unbeaten in the Premiership last season to emphatically secure 55 but his current deal is up in the summer and amid uncertainty about his future, his form has dropped off alarmingly.
Earlier this week, Football Insider reported that he’d turned down a contract offer.
However, Rangers media partners Heart & Hand rubbished that claim on Friday and when GvB was asked about Goldson during a press conference later in the day, he insisted that talks were ongoing.
“I spoke to Ross about it today,” said the manager [RangersTV]. “He is still talking with his (Goldson’s) agents. So there is nothing new we have to say. It’s still speaking terms with the agents, so we have to wait.”
“I think they are talking. I saw reports he has rejected an offer but that is untrue.
“They are still talking so hopefully we can have more news in the coming weeks or months.”
Rangers boss weighs in on Goldson speculation
It’s far from ideal that there’s still uncertainty about Goldson’s medium to long-term future with the January transfer window looming.
Rangers have made it clear that any new contracts have to fit within an existing wage structure, though, and it’s important that they don’t bend over backwards for a player who was a colossus last season but who is currently out of form.
After three and a half years at the club, the Englishman is entitled to weigh up his options, but with fixtures coming thick and fast this month, his priority should be getting back to his best on the pitch.
