Rangers boss Steven Gerrard snaps back at reporter for criticism question

A particularly serious Steven Gerrard shut down a reporter for asking him repeated questions about the Rangers boss’ criticism of his side in the aftermath of the Kilmarnock defeat.

The Ibrox boss questioned the mentality of his players as Rangers [RangersTV] fell to a 2-1 defeat at Rugby Park, with Celtic’s 5-0 win over Hearts opening a ten-point gap between the Old Firm pair.

Previewing the club’s tie against Livingston, Gerrard shut down a reporter for asking him about his post-match comments despite already answering questions on the subject earlier in the interview.

“First of all, am I allowed to criticise my players? Is that not my job?” said Gerrard.

“Then what’s the problem? What would you have thought of me if I’d have said there’s no problems here we’re all fine, serious, what would you have thought of me?”

The reporter responds, “strange, it would’ve been a strange reaction.”

“Next question,” said Gerrard.

The Ibrox boss was clearly frustrated at persistent questions on the comments he made post-match against Kilmarnock.

Like every bluenose across the world, there was a bitter disappointment as the club’s title hopes slipped further out of view.

Earlier in the interview, Gerrard addressed his comments on questioning the mentality and character of the Rangers players to another reporter.

“I think my way of looking back at what I’ve said is I always try and be honest,” said Gerrard.

“I don’t want to get in a situation where people don’t believe me or it’s not authentic so at the time how I felt, I felt we’d really let ourselves down.

“I took responsibility for the group’s performance on the night. So I have no regrets in terms of what I’ve said.

“We’ve played ourselves into this position, not just on that night, since we’ve come back.

“I also have to speak to a fanbase that’s worldwide and I think that they’d want me to be honest and pointed, so I don’t want to sit here and change my ways.”

Rangers welcome Livingston to Ibrox this weekend with Steven Gerrard’s side in must-win territory as the Gers look to haul back momentum in the title race.
