Rangers boss Steven Gerrard appeared to express his frustration with Ibrox striker Alfredo Morelos for role his suspension played in the injury to Jermain Defoe.

During the press conference which looked ahead to the Ibrox club’s home tie with Livingston this weekend, Gerrard nodded to the striker’s suspension on a couple of occasions.

Throughout his Rangers career, Alfredo Morelos’ disciplinary record has been a great source of frustration whether or not his reputation proceeds him, or if he is harshly treated.

Morelos missed the first three games of Rangers’ return from the winter break and reappeared from the bench against Ross County after a calf problem.

Gerrard made mention of Alfredo’s suspension playing a role in the calf injury sustained to Jermain Defoe, who will remain side lined for the next month or so.

“We’ve added someone into the squad off the back of an injury,” said Gerrard [Rangers].

“I believe the injury come to Jermain because of a suspension to Alfredo because we were left having to play Jermain in four games which he hasn’t done for such a long time.”

It wasn’t the only mention Gerrard made of the Colombian striker’s absence as he dissected the 2-1 Rugby Park to defeat to Kilmarnock in midweek and previewed the tie with Livingston.

Speaking about a lack of depth up front amid suspensions and injuries, Gerrard also commented on Morelos’ recent suspension and how off-field issues have influenced the striker’s performance.

“I think we’re fine now but if we didn’t manage to get Kamberi in we would’ve been really stretched in that area,” said Gerrard.

“We also knew that our forward was in a situation off the field so it wasn’t an ideal situation.

“Do I think it’s had an effect on him? Quite possibly yes.

“[To get him back to form] Give him the support he needs, give him the protection he needs.

“Forward have these kind of situations, sometimes it’s nothing to do with what’s happening off the field, sometimes it happens naturally.

“But there’s signs of late that he’s getting back to it. He scores at Hamilton, he scores a perfect goal at Killie which is ruled out.”

With Jermain Defoe still ruled out with injury Alfredo Morelos is likely to lead the line for Rangers against Livingston tomorrow.
