Rangers boss Steven Gerrard had admitted that an injury blow to Jermain Defoe could change his plans for the remainder of the January transfer market.

The Ibrox boss has held back from making any signings into the club and has consistently reiterated that this window is about trimming a bloated squad.

But whilst he admitted he expects some movement into the club in the coming days, Gerrard also conceded the scale of Jermain Defoe’s injury might also change his thinking.

“Hopefully it’s not as bad as it looks,” said Gerrard [Rangers].

“We’ll assess him in the next 24 48 hours and go from there.

“If it’s more than two or three weeks then we’ve got a problem there and it might affect what we do in the next couple of days.”

Gerrard later added [Daily Record]:

“I haven’t spoken to Ross about that yet but we’ve a couple of things brewing besides that so it might alter a few things or make us go in.

“In general I’m confident we could add. If Jermain isn’t as bad as feared I’m still confident we could add. No officials bids for Jones or Barker that I’m aware of.”

Jermain Defoe’s injury may well be a wake-up call to Rangers with the case being made that the club lack a third striker in case something happens to either Jermain or Alfredo Morelos.

Gerrard’s comments also suggest that whilst he does have things cooking in the background concerning transfers, a striker might’ve not been a priority.

Given Alfredo’s recent disciplinary record and now Jermain’s yet to be determined injury, it creates a considerable issue in the final third.

The likes of Greg Stewart can play upfront and Sheyi Ojo was tried out up there against Ross County, but the club clearly lacks a quality, natural third option upfront.

Even if the injury blow to Jermain Defoe isn’t as bad as first feared, should Rangers be looking to add another striker anyway?
