Rangers boss in Europa League selection hint as Italian-born talent makes impression

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has admitted that Ibrox talent Calvin Bassey is in his thinking ahead of the Europa League Playoff clash with Alashkert of Armenia.

The 21-year-old left-back put in a stellar showing in the 5-0 League Cup demolition of Dunfermline as Borna Barisic dropped out of the side amid a poor run of form.

It’s a performance which has not gone unnoticed by Steven Gerrard who paid tribute to the ex-Leicester kid for forcing his way into the Gers manager’s thinking.

“Calvin [Bassey] is in a fantastic place and his confidence is high,” said Gerrard [Rangers].

“His performance was strong the other night and has given me something to think about. I’m happy with both my young full-backs.

“We play what is in front of us, we are focused on the match tomorrow and aiming for a positive result.

“We have a very strong squad to aim to get the jobs done over two legs.”

The performance of Italian born Bassey, 21, was a particular highlight in the win over the Pars and the full-back picked up from where he left off after a strong pre-season.

The wing-back was a menace throughout the entire match and helped the Gers get underway as he pounced on a slack Graham Dorrans back pass to cut back to John Lundstram.

Bassey’s contribution wouldn’t end here as the defender carved out a host of opportunities down the left hand side and even set up another goal for Ianis Hagi.

The player’s performance comes at a time when many fans believe Borna Barisic is stuttering and this had led plenty to request Bassey gets a run in the team.

Still only 21 and with plenty to learn, read more from Rangers fans who want to see Calvin retain his place for the visit of the Armenians.
