Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has admitted he is still in the hunt for another midfielder but reluctantly admitted the club are “not ready” to sign one yet in his latest transfer update.
In ominous comments, Rangers boss Gerrard was speaking amid a growing injury crisis after the 2-2 draw with Hibs at Easter Road.
Whilst Gerrard talked up the performance of midfield trio Scott Arfield, Glen Kamara and Steven Davis in the Scottish Premiership draw, the Rangers boss suggested the club is no closer to finding a solution to their midfield woes.
“I thought our midfield were really good today. I need those three to be really big for me in the coming games,” said Gerrard [Glasgow Live].
“We do need another number in there but unfortunately we’re not ready to add that number yet.”
Those comments paint a worrying picture of the situation at Ibrox with Steven Gerrard being very clear that his side needs a new midfielder for about six weeks.
The Ibrox gaffer first mentioned the need for someone in the “engine room” back at the beginning of August [Daily Record].
A frustrated Gerrard would then ask the Ibrox board to up the ante after the club’s 4-0 win over Dundee United in September.
Since then high-profile links to the likes of South African international Bongani Zungu and Preston midfielder Daniel Johnson have not heralded any results – as of yet at least.
At the same time, Rangers let the likes of Greg Docherty and Ross McCrorie move on, leaving Jamie Barjonas as the club’s only recognised midfielder on the bench against Hibs.
