Ever since the takeoever of Newcastle United Rangers boss Steven Gerrard had been extensively linked with the role.
The Ibrox gaffer is reportedly one of three names being considered by the new Saudi-led hierarchy to steer the Magpies into a new Premier League era.

Gerrard, 41, has been named by the Times alongside Belgium boss Roberto Martinez and Villarreal gaffer Unai Emery as the the three names being sounded out by the new regime at St James’ Park.
However, in the last few days there have been a spate of reports suggesting the Toon may well look elsewhere for their new manager.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is not the only England legend being named alongside the role at Newcastle.
The Gers manager refused to be drawn on speculation regarding the position last week as he praised the legacy of current boss Steve Bruce ahead of his 1000th game.
However, following a 3-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Tyneside the pressure is building behind Bruce with Newcastle in the relegation zone and without a win this season.
Whilst speculation surrounding Gerrard is likely to persist until Bruce’s future is decided one way or another, another former England captain’s name has been mentioned alongside the job.
Current Derby County manager Wayne Rooney has been dealt a difficult hand at Pride Park and according to reports he has one eye on what happens with the Magpies.
According to the Chronicle, Wayne Rooney is interested in the Newcastle United job should it become available in the coming weeks.

This follows a report in the Mirror suggesting ex-Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard is another name being considered by the new owners at St James’ Park.

Whilst plenty may well be willing the Gers boss out of Glasgow, a familiar face in the city is another name being linked to the job.
