Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has claimed that a contract extension for Borna Barisic is getting ‘closer as the days go by’ despite interest from Roma, as quoted by the Glasgow Times.
Barisic enjoyed an outstanding first half of the season, performing to a high-level defensively and registering 13 assists in all competitions.

Gerrard recently admitted that Serie A side Roma had registered interest in the player, but the plan was to try to stave off their interest with a new deal [Glasgow Times]. So far, it seems talks are progressing nicely.
“We are in talks so it is getting closer as the days go by,” said Gerrard, as quoted by the Glasgow Times. “Ross (Wilson) is speaking to Borna’s representation and when there is some news on it I will give it to you.”
“I am confident because the boy is happy. I have got a fantastic relationship with Borna where we communicate a lot. He seems really happy and settled here and he is really enjoying it…I think when you are happy as a footballer you should stay put.”

Verdict
It would be a major coup for Rangers not only to hold onto their star left-back amid interest from a big Italian side but to actually tie him to an extended deal.
Barisic’s current contract runs until the summer of 2022, but his performances deserve improved terms and it shows good intent on the club’s part to initiate discussions.
The full-back is an important part of the quest for 55 and having been rested against Stranraer on Friday, is set to return to action tonight against St Mirren.
With James Tavernier out injured, even more responsibility will fall on the Croatian international in an attacking sense, and after a three-week break, he’s sure to be raring to go.
