Cedric Itten wasn’t the only rare Rangers starter to earn praise from Steven Gerrard following the 2-0 win over Lech Poznan on Thursday night [RangersTV].
Itten scored the opening goal in Poland as the Gers secured top spot in Europa League Group D and extended their unbeaten run to 26 matches.

The Swiss international put in what Gerrard described as a ‘Man of the Match’ display, but Bongani Zungu was another who impressed him on the night.
The South African was also making his first-ever start in the competition and was praised for a commanding showing in midfield.
“I thought Zungu played with control and authority,” said the Rangers manager [RangersTV]. “He had a real presence in the middle of the pitch and I was really happy with what I saw from him.”
Things didn’t start well for Zungu, who was harshly booked in just the 7th minute after losing his footing while challenging for the ball, but he delivered a highly-disciplined showing thereafter in what was his first real test since arriving on loan from Amiens in October.

His positioning and ability to sense danger were impressive, while he showed composure on the ball and a good range of passing.
The 28-year-old faces tough competition in midfield with Scott Arfield, Steven Davis, Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo all currently available and Ryan Jack soon set to return from injury.
However, it’s clear that he has plenty to offer the side going forward and with games coming thick and fast this month, it’s likely that he’ll receive plenty more playing time before the turn of the year.
Ahead of Monday’s Round of 32 draw, plenty of Rangers fans are hoping to avoid a high-flying Spanish club.
