Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has hinted that Kemar Roofe won’t make the starting lineup for the home clash against Livingston on Sunday, as captured by RangersTV.
On Thursday night, Roofe stunned the footballing world with a spectacular strike from inside his own half as the Gers triumphed 2-0 over Standard Liege in Belgium.
However, it was the 27-year-old’s first appearance in over a month due to a calf injury and he was only given a shade over 15 minutes of playing time off the bench.
Speaking on Friday, Gerrard appealed for patience from supporters, suggesting in the process that the ex-Anderlecht and Leeds United star isn’t yet ready to return to the starting XI.
“We need to get Kemar up to speed,” he said, as captured by RangersTV. “I don’t think yet we’ve had him at 100%. He got really close to that before he got his latest injury and then he obviously missed a month which was frustrating for everyone.”
“I think everyone is expecting me to just plunge him in every single game now because of the goal [on Thursday night]. That won’t be the case. We’ll treat him with care and we’ll get him up to speed at the right time and when he’s ready, he’ll come back into the team.”
Rangers boss hints Kemar Roofe unlikely to start vs Livingston – Verdict
It’s not a huge surprise that Roofe is set to be omitted from the starting XI on Sunday, especially given the options at Steven Gerrard’s disposal right now.
The striker may make another second-half substitute appearance, but there’s no need to rush him back into the side when players like Cedric Itten, Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos are all available.
Rangers coped very well without both Roofe and Joe Aribo while they were sidelined due to injuries but now they are back available, the priority has to be keeping them fit so that they can contribute heavily across the remainder of the season.
