Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has called out SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan as he speaks on the “absolute mess” that is the SPFL’s league-ending proposal vote.

The Ibrox gaffer is backing his club’s calls for an independent investigation into the vote, with Rangers refusing to hand over evidence of corruption to the SPFL themselves.

Anfield legend Gerrard has called on the organisation to open itself up to an independent probe in order to make sure there has been “fairness and transparency”.

“From afar the SPFL looks an absolute mess,” Gerrard told Sky Sports.

“All I ask is for the main leader of the SPFL to show some real leadership.

“I think what he has to do now – because there are so many accusations, doubts and questions about this institution – is allow an independent investigation into the setup to prove everything wrong and make sure there is fairness and transparency.”

The Ibrox gaffer was speaking as the SPFL announced they have now controversially accepted Dundee’s altered Yes vote, meaning their proposal has passed  [SPFL].

Hearts chair Ann Budge has warned that those believing that this will be the end of the matter are being “optimistic” whilst the threat of a legal challenge looms large [Hearts].

Partick Thistle previously threatened the SPFL with a legal dispute claiming that according to the organisation’s own articles, Dundee’s original No vote “must stand” [PTFC].

Ibrox manager Gerrard has also refuted the suggestion that the SPFL should launch their own internal investigation, claiming the SPFL can’t be seen to be “marking their own homework.”

“The SPFL have said they’re open to an internal investigation but I don’t agree with that because you shouldn’t really be allowed to mark your own homework,” said Gerrard.

“If you mark your own homework, you’re always going to come top of the class. There’s not going to be any questions asked.

“I’m waiting for the leader [chairman] Murdoch MacLennan to say ‘Ok, this is our organisation, I’m going to be the leader, show leadership and I’m going to allow an outside investigator to come in and go right across the whole situation and prove that everything’s clean’.

“And if everything’s clean, fair and transparent then the media and ex-players can’t slam the organisation.”

Rangers called for an independent investigation into the SPFL last week, claiming a whistleblower has supplied them with evidence worthy of suspending SPFL chief exec Neil Doncaster and legal advisor Rod McKenzie [Rangers].
