Rangers left-back Borna Barisic completed his second 90 minutes in as many internationals for Croatia but couldn’t help his side to three points against Azerbaijan.
World Cup finalists from 2018, Croatia were held in Baku to leave the race for qualification in Group E of the Euro 2020 qualifiers wide open.
Croatia sit top of the group on 10 points but Slovakia and Hungary have nine, whilst Wales are in fourth place with six.
It would be a disaster for Borna Barisic’s side not to make the competition and the nation will be disappointed to stumble to Azerbaijan having led inside eleven minutes.
With five games played and three remaining, the Croats will hope the likes of Luka Modric and Ivan Perisic can lead them to qualification.
Barisic too has become a consistent presence at left-back for Croatia and Rangers fans will be hoping he can do the same at Ibrox in the coming months.
Rangers are set to be without Jon Flanagan’s services for several weeks following a hernia operation, something which surely gives Barisic a run in the first team.
This gives Barisic the chance to build himself into the Rangers side – as he has done with Croatia – and prove he has what it takes to make the grade at Ibrox.
