Rangers biggest away result since that night in Florence

It’s been eight years since Rangers turned out in European competition.

Eight long years for everyone associated with the club.

Eight long years for the fans.

But far from make up the numbers, Gerrard’s fledgling Rangers side threw some serious punches against European heavyweight Villarreal. They might’ve hit the canvas twice, but they came roaring back to land two heavy blows.

The 2-2 v Villarreal was Rangers biggest away result in over a decade.

One night in Florence

The game in question was a hard fought, spirited draw against Fiorentina in the UEFA Cup Final. The draw then took the game to penalties.

Nacho Novo stepped up, and the rest is history.

That season the Light Blues reached the UEFA Cup Final, and fans have been singing that this year we’ll be doing the same.

With all the talk coming from George Peat and the wave of enthusiasm behind Gerrard, is it destined to happen?

Who knows? But it’d be a giant ask. Let’s just enjoy the ride.

Where does result rank with away days from 2008?

During the famous UEFA Cup final run, Rangers have had some pretty stunning away days.

Under Walter Smith in 2008 the club was spoilt with them. Rangers hammered Lyon 3-0 in France, with McCulloch, Cousin and Beasley scoring. It was a huge result in the Champions League.

As the Gers dropped into the UEFA Cup, Steven Whittaker inspired victory away to Sporting Lisbon with a superb solo goal.

Last night, Gerrard’s Rangers was reminiscent of Smith’s. But how does it rank with the results from that Smith team?

Well, it all depends how valuable the point is at the end of the group stages.
