Rangers away form demands more creativity in midfield

Rangers away form hasn’t exactly set the heather alight this season. But after a flattering 4-1 win over Hamilton yesterday, it’s at least started to smoulder.

Rangers fans will be hoping that the result is a catalyst for picking up more hard-earned points on the road.

But the result glosses over what was a poor performance.

Rangers lack invention away from home

At Ibrox, there’s real up-tempo fluency to our game. The ball rolls out to either flank and the centre backs move out. We’re authoritative. It’s then pushed into the middle where we’ve been very quick and tidy in creating space and chances for the wingers and striker.

We’ve moved the ball superbly at times in the middle at Ibrox and go from one end of the pitch to the other very quickly.

Away from home, that same midfield space feels very bogged down. We’re slow and lethargic and we go backwards instead of forwards. It doesn’t have the same urgency. Rangers away form is testament to that.

We lack leadership and guile and that same ability to create space and goals when teams are playing a physical game. With Scott Arfield out, that was especially evident yesterday.

Rangers lack a real creative, driving force in midfield who can shoulder the responsibility to be direct against teams that sit in.

But is it a case of letting those at the club settle into that role first?

Or with January coming up, will this kind of experienced number 10 be someone Gerrard is looking to bring in?

Someone like an ex-Rangers captain perhaps?
