Rangers avoided a real bullet in not keeping Josh Windass

The criticism of Josh Windass this week has been on an unprecedented scale.

Wigan Athletic crashed to a 4-0 hammering at Preston North End with Windass in the starting XI. It’s fair to say that their supporters haven’t been too overly-enthusiastic about his performances so far.

Since arriving at the Latics in August, Windass has scored just one goal in his opening 10 appearances. His latest display, however, saw him substituted after 69 minutes for Callum McManaman.

It was another dreadful display from the former Rangers star, who consistently split opinion during his time at Ibrox. Here’s a small taster of what Windass has been experiencing from supporters since that match:

Plenty of ruthless posts

There’s plenty more like it out there. All you have to do is post “Windass” into the Twitter search bar and you’ll see some of the more ruthless opinions on him.

It shows that supporters simply aren’t liking what they’re seeing from the Englishman. In the end, this is looking more and more like a smart business move by Rangers to offload him for a seven-figure fee.

Who would you rather have in the team? The likes of Ryan Kent and Scott Arfield? Or would you prefer having Windass back? There’s simply no contest here, and Rangers have avoided a massive bullet in managing to get rid of him.

It initially looked like Windass had a big part to play in Steven Gerrard’s plans this season. Being part of some of the Europa League squads combined with an opening day appearance at Pittodrie, he was very much part of things. That didn’t look like changing before the move to Wigan came about.

Fortunately for the club, the Latics came calling and Windass subsequently jumped at the move.

To put it into perspective, would Rangers have signed Windass had he not played for the club before and was performing how he is down in the Championship? No chance. It wouldn’t even come into consideration, and it shows how poor a level of player Windass actually is.

He gave his all for the club, that much is certain. But for quality? Fair play to Rangers for seeing that, in the end, it was very limited. Gerrard has avoided a bullet here, and should be delighted at how things have worked out.
