A host of fringe and youth players were given opportunities in the first half before ten changes at the break saw the introduction of many established first-team players, with keeper Robby McCrorie the only starter to complete the match.

Light Blues skipper James Tavernier missed a penalty but a good finish from Cedric Itten in the 83rd minute ensured that the Gers still kicked off their pre-season with a win.

Steven Davis was one of the stars to be introduced at half-time and McAllister was impressed by his showing.

“The second half we played more senior players on the pitch and you could see the composure and the quality,” he said [RangersTV].

“Looking at Steven Davis again, outstanding, and I thought he was the pick of the game tonight.”

After opting out of travelling with Northern Ireland for a pair of end-of-season friendlies against Malta and Ukraine, the 36-year-old was able to benefit from a proper summer break.

The rest was well earned after his substantial contributions for club and country last season and he looked fresh at Firhill.

The veteran’s introduction immediately brought a calmness to the Gers’ play and he floated all over the park distributing the ball well, while he also helped out defensively on several occasions when Thistle ventured forward.

His performance reinforced how important his one-year contract extension was, with Davis key to Rangers’ hopes not just domestically but also in Europe.

Davis impressed McAllister against the Jags but a lot of supporters were more focused on the contribution of an impressive youngster.
