Rangers asset Joe Aribo tipped to fill Nigeria's Jon Obi Mikel void

Former Nigeria international midfielder Henry Nwosu has delivered big praise for Joe Aribo, during an interview with Soccernet.ng.

The Gers midfielder scored a fantastic goal against Brazil on Sunday, continuing a stunning start to his international career.

Last month, he took just four minutes to net on debut against Ukraine and he wowed Rangers fans again with his exploits over the weekend.

Rangers asset Joe Aribo lauded

“The performance of the Super Eagles against Brazil was superb and I am impressed with the way the players approached the game,” Nwosu told Soccernet.ng. “One player that caught my attention was Joe Aribo because he’s just playing in his second game for the Super Eagles and displayed some high level of football.”

“The goal he scored was also genius based on his quick movement with the ball before beating Brazil goalkeeper, Ederson. If he continues this way, I simply believe he has what it takes to replace Mikel Obi in the heart of the Super Eagles midfield.”

Verdict

Jon Obi Mikel was a stalwart in midfield for the Super Eagles, earning 89 caps across a 14-year international career, during which he helped his country to the 2013 African Cup of Nations title as well as bronze at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He eventually retired in the summer after captaining the side to third in the 2019 AFCON.

Therefore, for Aribo to be mentioned in the same breath as him after just two outings, shows just how big an impression he’s made.

It’s amazing to think that last season he was playing in EFL League One, and just a matter of months later, he’s scoring against a team boasting stars such as Thiago Silva and Dani Alves in the back four.

It’s made Lee Bowyer’s bitter summer comments look that bit more foolish and shows the 23-year-old made the right call moving to Ibrox.

Let’s hope he takes his impressive form back to Rangers next week, with a crunch clash away to Hearts on the horizon.
