Rangers are starting to become too reliant on Ryan Kent

Ryan Kent’s displays for Rangers have been one of the most positive aspects of Steven Gerrard’s reign.

The on-loan Liverpool winger has become adored by the supporters for his explosive performances down the left. Such is the impressive nature of the winger, however, Rangers have started to rely on him.

It was never more evident than in the Betfred Cup semi-final against Aberdeen. Kent was once again the only one who looked like doing anything to break down the Aberdeen defence. Despite Daniel Candeias’ energy and blistering runs down the right, he offered nothing with his final ball.

Kent was often the same with his crossing, but he was always the one Rangers were looking for to pick the ball up and do something.

Gerrard stated after the game that his side missed Alfredo Morelos. Whilst that may have been true to an extent, it was only because not enough players grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck going forward.

It was the same against Spartak Moscow last Thursday night too. Kent was the man it felt that Rangers were waiting on to get the ball and make something happen.

Frustrating element

What’s frustrating about that for Rangers supporters is that there are plenty of other footballers in the side capable of taking up the mantle. Candeias could be a star if he improved his final ball, whilst Ovie Ejaria’s quick feet could be utilised more effectively.

Rangers have let a sluggishness creep into their game in recent times. In the 4-1 win over Hamilton last weekend, it was also clearly evident. Going forward, Gerrard’s men just can’t break anyone down at the moment.

If it isn’t Kent that’s doing the damage, then it isn’t anyone. For a young Liverpool youth player to have such responsibility is great from a personal standpoint. If Rangers are going to challenge for honors, however, they need more creative influences.

Rangers still have the likes of Glenn Middleton and Eros Grezda in reserve. Many believed Grezda would’ve started as Rangers’ surprise striker against Aberdeen. He’s another who has to start stepping up to live up to his big reputation.

Rangers disappointed everyone yesterday with their display. Kent was the man entrusted to do the damage, and too often nobody else is stepping up.
