For the last seven seasons, Rangers had retired the number 12 shirt in the name of supporters.
The club announced the move back in 2012 as a thank you to the fans who’d stuck by the club through a tumultuous administration.
A nod to the “12th man” the retiring of the shirt was a thank you to fans. But this season it’ll be worn by third-choice goalkeeper Andy Firth.
The image suggests that Rangers have decided to take the number 12 shirt out of retirement for the season ahead.
It’s an interesting move, especially when you consider there’s been nothing official said by the club and that Ally McCoist once said it would be “forevermore”.
The circumstances surrounding Rangers at the time were significantly different, however, and maybe the backroom staff feel it is time to move on.
When the number 12 shirt was originally retired, then manager Ally McCoist told Rangers.co.uk.
“Supporters are often referred to as the 12th man and now more than ever we are seeing the incredible backing of our global fanbase doing all they can to help Rangers in difficult circumstances.
“To that end, we will pay tribute to our fans by retiring the No.12 jersey in their honour and dedicating it forevermore to the supporters.
“I have been truly humbled by the way our fans have supported the club since we went into administration.
“To a man, our support has been everything that we thought it would be and more, and they have shown an allegiance to the club, to the staff and the players which has been unequalled.
“It is clear our supporters will march with us to the ends of the earth and I would like to personally thank each and every one of them for their on-going loyalty and commitment to the club we all love.
