Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor is a surprise inclusion in the nominees for this year’s Football Writer’s Player of the Year award.
And not because the Rangers goalkeeper hasn’t been on sparkling form at times this year. But rather because McGregor was excluded from the Scottish PFA Awards.
The veteran Rangers goalie will go up against Gers striker Alfredo Morelos and Celtic duo James Forrest and Calum McGregor for the award.

The Rangers goalkeeper has put in some amazing showings this season, particularly during Rangers’ European run. Europe has often been a special battleground for McGregor and suffice to say, we wouldn’t have got there without him.
It’s not the only recognition McGregor has had this season either. Celtic midfielder and namesake Calum McGregor revealed in April that he actually voted for McGregor in the SPFA Award running [
It’s always nice to be nominated and McGregor will enjoy the fact he’s made the Football Writer’s shortlist. But given Rangers have ended the season trophyless, he’d have much rather had some silverware.

The Rangers goalkeeper has also played his final game for Rangers this season. The Gers goalkeeper was sent off for violent conduct after a ridiculous kick-out against Hibs Marc McNulty, risking the ire of Rangers legend Graeme Souness [Football Scotland].
It means he’ll miss the upcoming Old Firm at Ibrox, as well as the final game of the season against Kilmarnock.
