Rangers affected by major UEFA rule proposal after clubs call for change

Rangers could be affected as UEFA reportedly plan to introduce a rule change for the Champions League and Europa League with regards away goals next season.

As of the next campaign, away goals will no longer count double in extra time should matches be tied after two legs in knockout competition.

This means that if matches are tied at the end of the second leg away goals will still count, but if both sides are level going into added time then any other goals scored won’t count double.

This means any goals scored in extra time will hold no extra advantage, the current rules a prospect which is heart-breaking for teams entering the additional 30 minutes of play.

Under current rules, should an away side score when matches go to extra time the home side would need to score two to stay in the tie and the game can no longer go to penalties.

According to the Scottish Sun, UEFA are set to rubber-stamp the move following increased scrutiny on the rule due to the use of neutral venues during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The current iteration of the away goals rule in competition has been in place since 1965/66.

Rangers reached the knockout round of UEFA competition for the second year in a row this season when the club made the Last 16 of the UEFA Europa League.

Next season Rangers will be hoping to have a stab at the Champions League with the Gers handed the chance to qualify for the competition for the first time in a decade.

The Ibrox side have also been handed a couple of key advantages over Celtic ahead of next season’s qualification following a major update regarding next season’s competition.
