The Rangers Twitter admin appears to have made a dig at a Scottish journalist for past comments about Steven Gerrard, following the win over Galatasaray.

Second-half goals from Scott Arfield and James Tavernier allowed the Gers to triumph 2-1 over the Turkish giants in the play-off round of Europa League qualifying on Thursday night.

The win ensured Steven Gerrard’s side have reached the group stages of the Europa League for the third consecutive season, a remarkable feat considering Rangers were dumped out by Progres Niederkorn in the first qualifying round the year before his appointment.

There was plenty of celebration on social media after the game and the club’s official account was at the centre of it.

Soon after the final whistle, the Rangers admin shut down a Galatasaray fan. In response to a tweet from before the game which warned ‘we are coming’ alongside a picture of a lion – that has since been deleted – the official Gers account posted an image of a domestic cat with a fake mane.

The tweet went down a storm with Bears and rival Turkish club fans, racking up over 55,000 likes at the time of writing.

More mischief would follow later when the admin appeared to take aim at Scottish journalist, Graham Spiers.

The club account tweeted an image of Steven Gerrard celebrating at the final whistle at Ibrox, captioned ‘Quietly terrified…’

The comment alludes to a controversial piece written by Spiers for the Times in 2018 which suggested that the recently appointed Gers boss “looked quietly terrified of the size of the job facing him in trying to mould Rangers into a force again in Scotland, let alone Europe.”

Gerrard stressed after the game that another strong start to the season will mean very little if no silverware is won. Yet, after another triumph over a big club at Ibrox, there’s now no doubt he has made the club into a force in European football once again.
