Rangers ace backs Ibrox-linked manager who did ‘incredibly well’ in last job

Nicolas Raskin is backing the potential appointment of Philippe Clement at Rangers with the former Club Brugge boss potentially bringing ‘an attacking style’ of play to Ibrox.

Paul Mitchell, the former Monaco sporting director, could hardly have spoke in more glowing terms about Philippe Clement when hiring the 49-year-old back in January 2022.

OK, Mitchell’s assessment of Clement as ‘one of the most prominent and successful coaches in Europe’ may have been going a little too far, but you certainly cannot argue with the Belgian’s track record in his homeland.

Philippe Clement wants Rangers job

Clement arrived at Monaco with three Jupiler League titles and two Belgian Coach of the Year awards on his CV.

And while the one-time Coventry City defender did leave the Principality after a highly-disappointing 2022/23 season, Rangers midfielder Raskin is keen to focus on his first season on French soil instead. One which saw Clement guide Monaco to a third-place finish, while getting the best out of the likes of Wissam Ben Yedder and Aleksandr Golovin

“I don’t know him personally,” former Standard Liege ace Raskin begins, via the Daily Record. “But he did very well with the two teams he had in Belgium. And he also did incredibly well at Monaco. So let’s see what happens in the future.

“Would he be a good fit here? Yeah, I think he’d bring some clarity and an attacking style. So I think he’d be good.”

‘He did incredibly well at Monaco’

According to TEAMtalk, Clement and his representatives touched down in London on Monday. He is expected to hold talks with Rangers chairman John Bennett and chief executive James Bisgrove in the capital.

Clement is understood to be ‘extremely interested’ in inheriting a hotseat vacated by Mick Beale.

Kevin Muscat – one who ‘knows the club’ after a spell in Glasgow two decades ago – appears to be the other leading candidate as things stand, though AZ Alkmaar boss Pascal Jansen cannot be ruled out either.
