TalkSPORT host Jason Cundy has tipped either Rangers or Celtic to defeat Manchester United if they meet in the knock-out stages of the Europa League.

The Gers aren’t out of Group G yet, but they took a big step towards progression, with a 2-0 win over Porto at Ibrox on Thursday night.

Celtic will emerge from Group E after their win over Lazio ensured they stay top.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have also secured progression, after a 3-0 win over Partizan Belgrade at Old Trafford.

“Over two legs, Celtic and Rangers could turn United over,” Cundy asserted to co-host Andy Goldstein, as quoted by talkSPORT.com. “They could. Of course they could. Trust me.”

“Let’s give credit where credit’s due, their two results are better than what you [United] served up tonight.

Verdict

It’s a sign of the times that Rangers are being credited with a chance of beating one of the biggest club’s in world football, in Manchester United.

Before Steven Gerrard took the Gers job, the team was struggling to compete domestically. Now, the Gers are a genuine force again in Scottish football and are making waves in European competition.

Meanwhile, Man United have experienced a dramatic fall from grace in recent seasons. Once the dominant force in the English game, they have gone through managers and players at pace and sit 1oth in the Premier League table, eleven games into the 2019/20 campaign.

Clearly, the Red Devils still have a squad worth a whole heap more than Rangers’. In Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, they have two top-quality forwards and although injured at the minute, world-cup winner Paul Pogba is up there with the best midfielders in the game.

Such has been their inconsistency this season, though, that Cundy’s comments aren’t totally ridiculous.

After all, Rangers just turned over a team that got to the same stage of the Champions League as United did last season…
