Pundit singles out ‘massive’ Rangers player and subtle tactical tweak that helped let shackles off

Now THAT was a Rangers performance everyone has been waiting to see.

Teams should be coming to Ibrox fearing being blown away like Kilmarnock were last night but it has not happened enough this season.

Gers were at their vibrant best with forwards interchanging and Ianis Hagi, Vaclav Cerny, Hamza Igamane and Danilo proving to be a four-pronged threat. Mohamed Diomande was getting forward and in on the act too.

Scoring six goals without a reply will be such a confidence booster for players and fans alike heading into a big few weeks for the club.

Rangers won’t be able to replicate that intense attacking pressure against the likes of Celtic and Tottenham, but if they can play like that more often then they will certainly be more enjoyable to watch.

Philippe Clement’s Rangers tactical tweak

Philippe Clement has been praised for letting the Rangers shackles off for the rout of Kilmarnock last night.

The team has shown more attacking intent since the draw with Dundee United and it manifested with a scintillating attacking showing at Ibrox.

And pundit Steven Naismith picked out one subtle tweak made by the manager. Instead of having Diomande sitting in beside Nicolas Raskin, he was able to roam forward as another attacking option.

Asked about a change in tactics on BBC Sportscene, he said: “Yeah, it was just having one sitter in the middle of the pitch allowing another body to get forward. I think most of this season you’ve seen two sixes sitting in the middle of the pitch.

“And for teams that allows them to sit in their structure a bit more.

“Having Diomande slightly higher then gives you the freedom of your forward players to pick up pockets and then create chances.

“And as the game developed the rotations were fantastic. That’s what Rangers teams of the past have done and what breaks teams down.”

“I think we seen the best front four Rangers have had all season.”

Marvin Bartley agreed: “Intelligence is massive because if somebody is coming into your position you have to move into a different one and that’s what Rangers did all night.

“It makes it difficult for Kilmarnock because if you’re not constantly talking, constantly checking your shoulder, you’re going to get broken down.

“It’s no surprise that Rangers go on to score six goals in this game. For me, that’s the best they’ve been domestically. There’s no doubt about it.”

Ianis Hagi ‘massive’ for Rangers

Naismith already had high praise for Ianis Hagi after his performance for Rangers vs St Johnstone.

His willingness to look forward and create every time he gets the ball has added a new dimension to the team and it was the same again last night.

Naismith insists the Romanian has been a “massive” player for Gers since coming back to the team.

He said: “Here, you see Hagi putting a ball in, who over the past few weeks has been a massive player that’s opened doors for the players running around him.”
