Livingston boss David Martindale might’ve been expressly disappointed in losing a late goal against Rangers but there was a touch of class regarding his words on Gerrard’s red card.
Martindale was in opposite dugouts from the Ibrox gaffer – for 45 minutes at least – but the Lions boss was classy when asked about Gerrard’s bust-up with John Beaton.
Not only that, but the likeable Livi boss also admitted that his side were lucky not to concede a penalty in the incident which sparked those scenes between Gerrard and Beaton.
Alfredo Morelos was brought down by Max Stryek in the first half of the match and was booked for simulation despite replays showing he was caught by the Livi goalie.
“We got away with one in the first half so I could understand Steven Gerrard’s reaction, of course I could,” said Martindale.
“I’d have been the same. Your emotions are high. They’re chasing title 55 and haven’t won it for 10 years.
“John didn’t mean to make a bad decision but your emotions take over and I can understand 100 per cent his frustrations.
“The performance was there from the boys, they were fantastic up until Rangers scored the winner.”
Given the tenseness of the situation it was a nice touch for Martindale to side with Gerrard regarding his emotions when he could’ve just as easily sat on the fence.
The Livi boss could also have peddled some kind of nonsense about Rangers getting off with decisions – as we’ve seen before from the likes of Jim Goodwin.
It’s a refreshing thing to see and hear and let’s hope the Lions boss can get his side back to winning ways before long.
Whilst Martindale might earn the applause of Rangers fans for his post-match comments there’s one Sky Sports figure who’s taken a tongue lashing off the Ibrox support.
