Reported Rangers target John Lundstram has been officially released by Premier League Sheffield United amid Ibrox links to the player only last week.
The ex-Everton youth midfielder, 27, was first linked to Rangers last summer by the Athletic and reports have persisted in the press ever since.
The most recent links came from Yorkshire Live who mentioned John alongside the Gers after Blades teammate Jack O’Connell confirmed the player’s exit on Instagram.
Now, Sheffield United have released a statement announcing the release of four first-team players following the club’s relegation to the Championship, with Lundstram amongst them.
Taking to the club’s official website, the statement reads:
“Following the conclusion of the 2020/21 campaign, Sheffield United’s official retained and released lists have been submitted.
“Phil Jagielka, John Lundstram, Simon Moore and Jack Rodwell will depart the club when their contracts expire this summer, as will youngsters Ashton Hall and Tommy Williams.
“Ethan Ampadu will return to his parent club, Chelsea, following his season-long loan.
“The club wishes all the departing players best wishes for their future endeavours and would like to thank them for their service to Sheffield United.”
Rangers have used the pre-contract market to strong effect throughout Steven Gerrard’s tenure at the club and this kind of deal appears to match up with the club’s transfer strategy.
However, since heavy links to Lundstram earlier in the season reported interest appears to have dried up with the Yorkshire Live report the first in a few months which has named Rangers alongside the player.
Should Rangers be interested in the ex-Everton youth star then they will likely face some Premier League competition with West Ham also linked to the player [The Sun [06/09/20, p.61]].
