A former Premier League star believes there is currently a player in the Rangers camp who could interest club’s from the English top tier in January.
Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips has lavished Rangers captain and free-scoring right-back James Tavernier with praise after his flying start to the season and believes English clubs could take notice.
Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips also compared Tavernier’s impress number this season to that of England captain and Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane.
“That is like Harry Kane’s stats. Wow. That is an area that Stevie G does not have to worry about,” said Phillips.
“He is on fire and to have scored that many goals and those assists as well is amazing. A lot of right-backs do not get that many assists in a whole season.
“Stevie G has given him the license to get forward and as long as when he bombs forward someone drops in, it will work. It is one hell of a stat.
“It is the sort of stat that Premier League teams will start to take notice of and come January a team that needs a right-back may come in for him. Long may his form continue.”
Rangers star Tavernier, 29, has taken things up a notch in his sixth season at Ibrox and has started the season on fine form, netting 12 goals in 20 games for Steven Gerrard’s side.
Tavernier has also produced nine assists in those 20 games as well as being part of a Rangers side which has kept 16 clean sheets this season.
It’s been an impressive start to the campaign from the former Newcastle United and Wigan man with the marauding full-back an early frontrunner for this season’s Scottish Player of the Year.
