Porto v Rangers – match preview and Rangers predicted XI

If you could trade all three points against Porto for another two against Hearts, most Rangers fans would probably bite your hand off.

The domestic league campaign and the Scottish Premiership remain the holy grail for Rangers fans, even if there’s the prospect of a mouth-watering trip to Portugal on the horizon.

In general, our players can find another level in Europe. Can we do it away from home against this year’s most difficult opponents?

The Ibrox side can count themselves unlucky to have left Young Boys and Switzerland empty-handed in the last round of fixtures.

The match was there for the taking and Rangers failed to capitalise on an injury-strewn Young Boys squad through what can only be described as their own incompetence.

An individual error cost us again v Hearts and Steven Gerrard was quick to point out after the match that if this happens on Thursday night, we could be on our way to a humbling.

Any result in Portugal is a good one and the club’s supporters will quickly dust themselves off for another big European night for Rangers.

With group G wide open and all four sides on three points, this could be one of the pivotal games in what always threatened to be a competitive group.

Whilst Rangers fans would relish an iconic victory against Porto, they’ll be expecting the side to take any result back to Scotland with them.

Because if this side thinks that a positive victory in Portugal is a tonic for dropped points or an excuse to be off the boil against Motherwell next weekend, the fan’s ire will soon tell them differently.

For this one, we predict three changes to the side which drew with Hearts.

Swedish international Filip Helander comes in for Niko Katic, Ryan Jack returns in the place of Glen Kamara and cult hero Ryan Kent makes his long-awaited return to the starting XI in place of Sheyi Ojo.
