Rangers fans could well miss out on yet another European away day after FC Porto were charged with racist chanting by governing body UEFA [Fox Sports].
The charge against Porto comes after Rangers refused an away allocation for their match with BSC Young Boys – coincidentally the next game in the group.
But should UEFA come down hard on Porto, Rangers may well feel the brunt of it through a stadium closure of the Estádio do Dragão.
It is being reported that Young Boys forward Jean-Pierre Nsame was subjected to vile chanting whilst preparing to take a penalty.
UEFA will make their decision on the punishment handed out to Porto next week (26/09) as the governing body continue to crack down on unacceptable behaviour in the stands.
Rangers have felt the full brunt of the governing body’s no-nonsense policy after two incidents in the qualifying stages of the Europa League.
The club was ordered to close part of the stadium against Legia Warsaw after sectarian chanting against St. Joseph’s at Ibrox [Rangers].
Rangers were then handed a second charge for chanting away to Legia Warsaw with the club proactively telling UEFA they would refuse tickets to their next away game in Europe.
The governing body still decided to order the partial closure of the stadium but the next time Rangers host European opposition the place will be full.
It is unlikely that will be the case when the Ibrox club travels to the home of the former Champions League winners.
Let’s just hope it’s not closed altogether.
