Philippe Clement urged to consider Rangers tactical tweak that could make ‘big difference’

Rangers are expected to do business in January to try and breathe new life into their season.

And the general consensus is that the biggest requirement for a positional upgrade is at centre-forward.

Cyriel Dessers continues to be the first pick as Danilo builds up his match fitness and Hamza Igamane remains raw. But Dessers failed to convince during the draw with Dundee United and was hooked for the Brazilian at half-time, which made a difference.

The Nigerian continues to divide opinion and while he does have 10 goals this season, he has only scored one in his last nine league games. He has four in total in the Premiership with the rest coming in Europe and in cups.

Rangers were yesterday told they should still be looking at Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland but the general consensus is they need to sign at least someone in that position.

Could Philippe Clement and Rangers play two strikers?

Tam McManus certainly agrees with others’ assertions that there should be a centre forward upgrade at Ibrox.

The pundit has identified that as the main issue in the Rangers team just now and reckons signing a “proper” number nine would make a “big difference.”

He said on the PLZ Soccer Football Show: “I think the main problem for Rangers at the minute is a lack of a proper number nine. Dessers played again the weekend, got hooked at half-time.

“I just think they’re missing a good number nine. I think it would make a big difference.”

The once Rangers-linked Scott Allan weighed in and insisted he would like to see Gers try playing with two up front instead of just the one.

He insists Clement has had plenty of chances to go with an attacking pair but has flat our refused.

“I would love to see them play two up,” Allan said. “Dessers and Igamane.

“How many times has there been in a game this season where he could go two up and maybe see something different? But he just refuses to do it.

Two Rangers strikers an option late in games?

Allan went on to explain that the two strikers doesn’t even need to be from the start of a match but something the manager could look to do towards the end of a 90 minutes.

He points out the Dundee United draw at the weekend would have been the perfect example of an opportunity to add another prong to the attack, especially with someone like James Tavernier able to come on and deliver crosses into the box.

Allan added: “My point is what Philippe Clement and Rangers in terms of formations or when they’re chasing a win at the end of the game and the score is 1-1 at Ibrox.

“We’ve seen that so many times and nothing changes. So there has got to be a point where he does change something. Get the two strikers on the pitch.

“Put James Tavernier, who is one of the best crossers in the league, on the pitch and put balls in the box. Make teams defend and you’ve got two strikers. He’s never done that.”
