Philippe Clement shows prickly side as Rangers boss reminded of Celtic gap

Philippe Clement showed his prickly side following Rangers’ defeat to Aberdeen.

The manager was quizzed at full-time by the media after goals from Nicky Devlin and Shayden Morris cancelled out Nedim Bajrami’s stunning equaliser at Pittodrie.

The Dons won 2-1 on the night to leave the Ibrox outfit sitting all the way back in third spot in the Scottish Premiership table and heaped pressure onto the Belgian boss.

Clement was not happy with the result but did, somewhat inexplicably, examine the performance on the night and described it as one of the better showings he has seen from his squad in recent times.

Defeat, however, is never good enough for Rangers and Clement’s future as manager has been hotly debated over the past few weeks.

The 50-year-old has attempted to play down any worries on his own job after only signing a new contract earlier this season.

But his reaction to a question during last night’s post-match presser showed that perhaps the pressure may finally be getting to him.

Philippe Clement was told the gap is now nine points at the top of the Scottish Premiership

Initially, earlier in his conference, the nine point gap was brought up after Celtic defeated Dundee in Glasgow last night.

Clement moved past the poser initially, but a second mention of the nine point difference was brought up once again, later in the interview which lasted just over seven minutes.

And the mask slipped a tiny bit from the Belgian’s face as he made it known he had spotted the reporter doubling down.

“Yeah you said to me (already),” Clement said, noticeably frustrated, “that’s the second time…”

Rangers have had a squad overhaul this summer

Then asked if has become an unacceptable situation to be third in the division, Clement added: “We lost too many points along the way.

“There’s only one way forward and that’s working hard and getting better. I don’t know if you saw the numbers coming out of the club?

“So there’s been a big rebuild, 16 players out. A lot of experience out of the building, a lot of new players in, cutting down the wages.

“There’s a big project to be done and we need necessary time for that to make it better and get experience for these young boys.”
