Philippe Clement homes in on European record after Rangers push Olympiacos all the way

Rangers were good value for their draw against Olympiacos and Philippe Clement can feel aggrieved to be flying back to Glasgow with one, rather than three points.

The manager got his game plan right and now knows that progress domestically away from Ibrox is the missing piece in the jigsaw to winning back the fans.

What Clement has shown, is that Rangers should fear nobody on their travels with a European record that is close to matching one set by Steven Gerrard.

Philippe Clement one game away from Rangers European record

Given the nature of the new Europa League league phase, picking up points at home and abroad is essential.

Nine points might be enough to progress to the knockout stages and, with seven already Rangers are in a good place.

Four points of these have come away from home and takes Clement’s record to six games unbeaten on his travels as the Light Blues boss.

So far; Sparta Prague, Real Betis, Benfica, Dynamo Kyiv, Malmo and Olympiacos have all tried, and failed to beat a Rangers team led by Clement, most of whom have recently been champions of their domestic leagues.

Clement sees Rangers build a base for the future

Clement was impressed with what his saw from a Rangers team who looked similar to that of Gerrard’s when in Europe in terms of shape and structure, in particular, it was the work off the ball that pleased him, as told to Rangers TV:

“The performance deserved more than the point. But it was a good performance and the team stuck to the plan for 90 minutes, they worked really hard,” Clement said.

“Without the ball, we played a really good defensive game against Olympiacos who normally create a lot of chances. We almost didn’t give away anything.

“Okay, that’s a pity (the Olympiacos goal) with one chance, you see the quality there when they scored the goal. But our reaction was good and that’s a major thing for our new squad to learn these lessons.”

There was more than just one point gained in Greece, Clement is right, the performance gives Rangers a base for future games in Europe, especially against teams with dangerous forward lines – like Man Utd and Spurs, on the horizon in the Europa League
