Belgian football journalist Sven Claes has claimed that manager Philippe Clement is considering offers from Rangers, Saudi Arabia and a third “unknown” club.
Speaking on Clyde One’s Superscoreboard [10/10/23], the established Belgian football journalist has claimed that Rangers are now in a three-horse race to land the Belgian manager.
Whilst links between Saudi Arabia and Philippe Clement have been widespread, Rangers fans will take note of a potential third option which threatens to scupper any deal for the manager.
It comes with Philippe Clement quickly becoming the frontrunner in the press to take over from Michael Beale at Rangers.
“He’s known for his very attractive football so I hope he succeeds,” said Claes. “It would be good for his reputation.
“He works very hard of course with all his staff members but to be honest the latest information that I’ve got is that they are still negotiating.
“But there is also still an offer from Saudi Arabia and a third unknown club so in Belgium at the moment nobody is wanting to confirm that it will be Rangers by the end of this week.”
Rangers face competition for manager Philippe Clement
Whilst the sounds around Philippe Clement and the Rangers manager’s job have been getting louder it’s clear than there has been no official decision reached as things stand.
Reports earlier in the week claimed that Rangers have offered Philippe Clement a heavily incentivised, long-term contract to compete with the wealth of Saudi Arabia.
However, it is believed that the 49-year-old manager is eager to test himself in Europe and a move to the Middle East as things stand is secondary to being convinced of somewhere closer to home.
That’s unless this “unknown” third option – with Sven Claes a very reputable source in Belgium – can tempt Clement elsewhere.
Having won three Belgian Pro League titles in a row between KRC Genk and Club Brugge, Philippe Clement is a free agent after being sacked by Ligue 1 AS Monaco in the summer.
Whilst the Belgian now appears the frontrunner for the Rangers manager’s gig, links to Australian coach Kevin Muscat persist in the press.
