Rangers supporters have responded after Jermain Defoe posted a video of a remarkable gesture to his mother on Instagram.

Defoe has been a hit with the Gers fan base ever since arriving at Ibrox – initially on loan from Bournemouth – in January 2019.

He came with a big reputation forged over many years in the Premier League, MLS and international football and he hasn’t disappointed on the pitch.

The veteran’s playing time has been limited and niggling injuries have set him back at times, but he’s still delivered 32 goals and ten assists in 72 appearances for the club.

Four of his strikes came in the Premiership this season as the Gers went the whole campaign unbeaten and finished a whopping 25 points ahead of second-placed Celtic.

Defoe’s reward for his contribution was a first league winners medal in a 21-year professional career.

Yet, in a remarkably unselfish act, he’s already passed the medal on.

The former England star posted a video on Instagram on Wednesday in which he calls round to his mother’s house and hands over both his medal and a ‘Defoe 9’ Rangers shirt.

He captioned the post: ‘My motivation from day one, this one’s for you mum.”

Defoe’s mum was visibly emotional at the gesture, as were plenty of Rangers fans, who heaped praise on the striker.

Here’s a selection of reactions from Twitter:

Despite some positive noises regarding an extension this month, Defoe’s Ibrox future is still very much up in the air.
