Partick Thistle announce support for Rangers’ EGM resolution

Partick Thistle have officially announced their support for Rangers’ resolution calling for an independent investigation into the SPFL’s ballot to end the lower-league season.

The Jags have been critical of the governing body for some time now and released a statement on Monday afternoon confirming that they too believe an investigation is required to provide answers.

“At a critically important time for Scottish football, the Club wants to share with you its voting intention ahead of the SPFL EGM tomorrow and briefly explain the reasoning behind our decision,” said the club’s chief executive, Gerry Britton, as quoted by ptfc.co.uk.

“The vote for an independent investigation isn’t a case of picking sides. Nor is it a failure to admit that an investigation is needed. It is a way for Scottish football to find a way out of the situation it has found itself in since 8th April. Unless something is done urgently to deal with the obvious breakdown in trust between parties, football in this country may never fully recover.

“That’s why we will vote “yes” to an independent investigation. To do nothing risks leaving our game fatally wounded.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this decision was taken last week before events unfolded around reconstruction.”

Verdict

Partick Thistle’s decision to make their voting intention public will be a source of encouragement for the Gers, who require 75% of member clubs to vote in favour of their resolution for it to pass.

The Jags are arguably the club who have been most damaged by the saga that has unfolded over the last month.

The vote to end the season put them at risk of relegation despite being only two points adrift at the bottom of the table with a game in hand.

When league reconstruction talks broke down over the weekend, their demotion was confirmed.

This is not a knee-jerk reaction based on that development, though, in fact, chairman Jacqui Low accused the SPFL of taking ‘leave of its collective senses’ back in April [ptfc.co.uk].

They are well within their rights to want answers and Rangers will be hoping that the Maryhill-based club’s approach encourages others to get on board too.
