Ahead of what’s likely to be another busy transfer window, Rangers need to largely avoid the Scottish market.
Outside of Florian Kamberi of Hibs, there’s not a player available who would improve Rangers. Steven Gerrard will be on the talent search once more as he looks to lure four new players to the club. The chances of them being from Scotland? Highly unlikely.
Look at the clubs who Rangers would be likely to sign from. Hearts, for example, just won’t sell any of their top stars at the moment. There’s a strong argument for a Steven Naismith or Uche Ikpeazu strengthening Rangers. They simply won’t be for sale, however, thanks to Hearts’ fast start.
Hibs also have such a talented front-man in Kamberi. Despite having one of his poorer games at Pittodrie last week, the Swiss forward has bagged an impressive seven goals in just 10 appearances this season. To put it into perspective, that’s three more than Lafferty despite having played the same amount of fixtures.
His goal at Celtic Park was mightily impressive also. Lashing a powerful left-footed effort into the top corner, he has something strong about him at only 23 years of age.
Nobody is likely to sell
In truth, however, Hibs are also unlikely to sell to Rangers. Neil Lennon still sees Gerrard’s men as one of their main rivals for second. Any negotiations between the two clubs are highly unlikely.
We put up a case for Chris Cadden having a big chance to impress Rangers last weekend, but he failed miserably. That move certainly doesn’t look like it’s on, and nobody else at Motherwell would be worth considering.
The Ibrox club have had their best success in the transfer market this season either down south or in Europe. Gerrard isn’t afraid to tap into Eastern European markets either, with Eros Grezda and Borna Barisic looking like two successful signings from Croatia.
The Rangers manager has already created a spine in his team. He doesn’t need to add anymore Scottish talent to it, particularly since none of the ones available would seriously improve the playing squad.
Aberdeen, Hearts, and Hibs all won’t sell to Rangers in January. At the very least, they won’t sell for a reasonable price.
Therefore, Gerrard should stay clear of the Scottish market in two months’ time if he wants to keep improving his newly-built squad.
